Course completions are not competency.

Axiom turns learning records, assessments and observations into an authorisation position you can defend — on the date the work was done, not the date the certificate was printed.

Instructor delivering practical equipment training to healthcare staff

Powered by Axiomcompetency and authorisation records, with LMS and SCORM completions delivered through Select.

From learning to authorisation

The gap most organisations have is not delivery of training. It is the step between a completion record and a defensible statement that someone is authorised.

Competency frameworks

Role and activity definitions with the evidence each one requires and the interval at which it must be revalidated.

LMS & SCORM intake

Completions and scores from your learning platform arrive through Select and update the person's record automatically.

Practical assessment

Observed sign-off captured on a device by the assessor, with criteria, outcome and any conditions attached.

Refresher scheduling

Expiry dates calculated from the evidence, with notice to the individual and their manager before a lapse.

Authorisation scope

Authorisation granted at activity level, so 'trained' means trained to do this specific thing, in this specific setting.

Induction & onboarding

A single checklist covering mandatory learning, local induction and the sign-offs a new starter needs before working unsupervised.

Competency matrix

A live grid of people against activities, showing who is current, who is lapsing and where the cover is thin.

Evidence store

Certificates, assessment forms and external qualifications held against the person, with source and verification recorded.

Audit reporting

Point-in-time reporting: who was competent for what, on any given date, with the evidence behind the answer.

Why the LMS alone isn't enough

A learning platform is very good at delivering and recording courses. It is not usually built to say whether a particular person was authorised to perform a particular task in a particular location on a particular day.

That gap matters because it is the question asked after an incident. A completion in an LMS, a practical sign-off in a folder and a rota in a spreadsheet do not combine into an answer without someone spending an afternoon on it.

Axiom holds the answer as a record. Select keeps the inputs flowing — completions from the LMS, SCORM results, joiners and leavers from HR — so the position stays current without manual maintenance.

What managers actually use

  • Who is current, lapsing within 90 days, and already lapsed
  • Cover risk: activities where too few people hold the authorisation
  • Outstanding induction items for new starters
  • Assessment history for an individual, including conditions and reassessments
  • Point-in-time answers for an investigation or an audit

Common questions

Do we have to move off our LMS?
No, and we'd generally advise against it. Your LMS remains the place learning is delivered; Axiom is the place competency is decided and evidenced. Select connects the two.
Does SCORM data come through?
Yes. SCORM completion and scoring data is consumed as structured events and mapped onto the competency requirement it satisfies.
Can competency drive access to work?
Where Apex is in use, a lapsed authorisation can prevent an engineer being scheduled or signing off a task that requires it.
How do external qualifications work?
They're recorded as evidence with an issuer, a reference and a verification status, so 'we've seen the certificate' is itself an auditable statement.
